3/23/13 Savin Rock 1/2M 1:41:59

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run a 5K under 25 minutes.  Under 22 minutes.  Under 20 minutes.  Run a 10K in under 45 minutes.  Run a 1/2M in 90 minutes.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run faster and farther... without major injuries.  The predictable soreness in my right knee reminds me of how irrational this form of exercise is, I bought a pair of Five Fingers and my knees have never felt better.  I'm now faster than I was during my 20s and 30s.

Achilles tendonitis or tendonosis is my latest injury.  The Five Fingers have been turned in and I'm back my old kicks with lots of heel support.

Personal:

I'm married, teach economics at a liberal arts school in RI, conduct research on American Indian economic development, trying to befriend a goat farmer, and looking to improve my espanol. Expecting our first child in mid October (check)!!  His name is Tucker.

First run on a treadmill in maybe 9 months.  Ran 7 miles: first at 7.0 mph, next 3 at 8.0 mph, and then 4 at 6.8 mph.  Soaked my feet afterwards.  At times, my second toe pain is throbbing, especially when I curl it.  Unfortunately, I subconsciously curl the darl thing or I curl it when I get tired, but overall, the pain isn't debilitating.

Today was supposed to be a rest day but I spend the lunch hour at the gym.  4 miles in 32 minutes and 15 miles on the stationary bike.

I planned to run 8 but I felt shooting pain in my right foot in the middle of the fourth mile, so I called it a today.  Iced it when I got home.  Overall pace was 8:04/mi.

I'm participating in a "do the equivalent of the Ironman in a month" thingamojob with my sister and various others, so I've been cross training a bit more than usual.  Today, biked 10 miles in around 35 minutes around West Rock and then ran 4 miles in 32 minutes on the treadmill at the Yale Univ. gym.

My second toe joint is still being a pill.  I bought a new pair of kicks today (Saucony Kinvara 3) which should give me more room in the toe box.  FYI, if you have wide feet like me, getting a 1/2 size larger, at least in a Saucony, is equivalent to the wide version of the 1/2 smaller.  Thus, you get the extra fabric in the toe box with the 1/2 larger but your heel doesn't move around, and you're not subjected to the hideous colors that wide shoes come in.  Win, win.

Another cross training day: 15 miles on the bike and 5 miles in 38.5 minutes (I ran two miles at 8.3 mph) on the tread.

Here it goes, I'm going to say it: I'm the only person I know who is not sick right now.
