Accomplishments: Few.

PRs:

1. 5K: 21:32.

2. 10K (B.A.A. 10K 6/26/11): 54:22.

3.  1/2 Marathon (The Eastern States 3/27/11): 2:02:36 Savin Rock 1:41:59.

2013 Race Results:

1/1/13 Chilly Chili 5K: 21:51

2/3/13 Run for the Refugees 5K: 21:38

3/23/13 Savin Rock 1/2M 1:41:59

Short-Term Running Goals:

Run a 5K under 25 minutes.  Under 22 minutes.  Under 20 minutes.  Run a 10K in under 45 minutes.  Run a 1/2M in 90 minutes.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Run faster and farther... without major injuries.  The predictable soreness in my right knee reminds me of how irrational this form of exercise is, I bought a pair of Five Fingers and my knees have never felt better.  I'm now faster than I was during my 20s and 30s.

Achilles tendonitis or tendonosis is my latest injury.  The Five Fingers have been turned in and I'm back my old kicks with lots of heel support.

Personal:

I'm married, teach economics at a liberal arts school in RI, conduct research on American Indian economic development, trying to befriend a goat farmer, and looking to improve my espanol. Expecting our first child in mid October (check)!!  His name is Tucker.

Ran 10 miles at an average pace of 8:08 on a beautiful fall afternoon in New Haven/Woodbridge area.  Jogged up and down three big hills, saw the carnage from Sandy, ran next to a few wild turkeys, and possibly witnessed a drug deal.

Here are my splits:

2 8:19
3 9:30
4 8:07
5 7:53

A 5k barefoot jog on a pitch-black evening (at 6:15, thanks DST).  AP of 7:50.

7 slow miles on a cold, dark evening in CT.  Had some pain in my right heel (originally wrote hell instead of heel, an obvious Freudian slip) which slowed me down to a crawl.  On my way to a hot bath after some additional stretching.

A fairly random snowstorm hit the NE today.  I was utterly unprepared for this.  After waiting for 30-45 minutes in the wind and snow for a bus to take me from downtown New Haven to my house (ca. 3 miles), I grew impatient, tightened my backpack and jogged home in the snow and slush.  I'll probably jog back to downtown New Haven tomorrow to pick up my bike.

Tried something new today : I took care of my grocery shopping by jogging to and from the supermarket.  4 total miles, 2 of which with 5 lbs of food in my backpack.  I actually think the gear helped my form b/c I typically look down when I run; however, today, I had no choice but to run upright.  Certainly would not call it a tempo run.

2 warmup miles, then 3 faster miles at pace of 7:30 before a dentist appointment.

Check out this video of a Scottish runner whose planning to run an impressive number of miles in a week.  The thoughts of his wife were entertaining.

I picked this race because it was the closest to my father's house where my wife and I were spending thanksgiving.  A beautiful course through the backroads and farms of Medway.  Finished with a personal best for a 5K of 21:32.  I ran this with my wife who doesn't jog regularly but finished with a respectful time of 25:00 minutes.

I think I can eventually run a 5K under 20 minutes.. we'll see.

6.5 easy miles around the hills of New Haven, CT.  Attended two presentations on American Indian living standards, one from the point of view of an economic historian and the other by a physician.  Both quite different and both insightful.  All in all, a good day.

First barefoot run in a while (i.e., three weeks, maybe four).

Ran 5 out of a planned 8 miles.  3 warmup miles, which included 3 tough (for me) hills, and then 2 faster miles, one at a pace of 7:42 mm and the other at 7:50 mm.  I cut the jog short because as much as my knees and muscles love barefoot running, my right foot hates the strap on my Bikilas.  Completely forgot about my pre-run ritual of dressing my foot with various band-aids and the like.  Whoops.

3 slow miles and 1 mile under 8:00 in the dark.  Fit in the jog between work and babysitting and given that I'm working on less than 3 hours of sleep, I'm thrilled to manage 4 miles today.
